Chapter 28
Evasion
Sulana slowed Stardust to a stop behind Nigel’s horse. The ranger who led their group had put up a hand for quiet. Voices carried from somewhere ahead, although the terrain made it difficult to determine distance or direction. The Lightning Corps was ahead of them in the forest.
Marshal Shields moved forward to confer with Lieutenant Tanous. Sulana crowded up as far as she could to listen in.
“They are ahead of us, Marshal. We can’t take this trail all the way out to the road.”
“I didn’t think we would, Lieutenant. We need to take one of the border trails. Preferably one that will take us a couple of miles away from the refuge entrance.”
The lieutenant frowned in thought for a moment. “I know of one, sir, but it’s not much more than a game trail. It will be slow going, and our passage will be obvious.”
“Let me worry about that. The main thing is to avoid contact. There are too many of them, and if they figure out where we are, they’ll be relentless.”
“Aye, Marshal. If I remember right, the trail I’m thinking of branches off just ahead.”
Sulana broke into the conversation. “But won’t we be heading toward them?”
The lieutenant looked annoyed at the interruption, but the marshal turned in his seat and responded casually. “It can’t be helped. The voices we hear are still a ways off. Sounds can be deceiving in these woods.”
Sulana nodded. “I’ll take your word for it. Sorry for interrupting.”
The marshal shrugged. “I understand your concern. But we do want to keep our chatter to a minimum from here on.”
Sulana nodded, and when they started moving again, she fell back to pass the warning along to Daven and Karla. The ranger who was at the end of the party didn’t seem to need the warning; he hadn’t said a thing since they’d left Karla’s cottage.
True to his word, the lieutenant found the border trail within another quarter mile. Unfortunately, the voices were getting closer as well.
When the lieutenant turned his horse onto the border trail, Sulana thought he had used some kind of druid spell. His horse simply vanished into the foliage. Then the marshal turned as well and she was able to make out the trail head more clearly. She had ridden on their current path a few times during her time on the refuge, and she’d never noticed this intersection.
As Sulana rode through the shrubs that obscured the trail, she pulled her legs in tight to avoid the branches that brushed against her and Stardust. No wonder she’d never seen this path. She could barely make it out while riding it.
After a short distance, the path opened up at the edge of a small meadow near the base of a rocky slope. The lieutenant and marshal stopped again and conferred briefly, but Sulana couldn’t make out what they were saying.
The marshal waved everyone to move closer. When he spoke his voice was barely loud enough for them to hear.
“Everyone wait here. Our horses will have left a clear path, so I’m going back to hide our trail.
